Often considered to be Rochester's bastard sister or mistress, Bertha Mason is the newly deceased wife of Mr. Rochester, who ended her life by jumping from the roof of Thornfield Hall, committing suicide. Once a beautiful and wealthy young woman, Bertha quickly descended into insanity, following in her mother's footsteps.
